Principal's Post

Dear Community of St Columba’s,

Thank You to Our Volunteers

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the parents who supported our Mercy Mission Day stalls and P&F Colour Run. Your generosity, time, and enthusiasm played a huge role in making the day such a fun and exciting event for everyone involved.

It was a busy but incredibly joyful time to see the community come together in such a vibrant and meaningful way. From creative stalls to colourful laughter, the day was a fantastic celebration of spirit and togetherness, and it would not have been possible without you.

Thank you once again for helping to make it such a memorable occasion. Special thanks to our P&F Executives and P&F Member, Bec Wilkey for the overall co-ordination. Another thank you to Bayswater Primary School for allowing us to use their oval for the Colour Run Event.

Sacrament of First Eucharist

This weekend, our Year 4 students will be receiving the Sacrament of First Eucharist, and we keep them in our prayers during this very special time.

First Eucharist, also known as First Holy Communion, is when a person receives the Body and Blood of Jesus in the form of bread and wine for the very first time. It is one of the most important steps in the Catholic faith, as it brings us closer to Jesus and reminds us of His love and sacrifice.

We pray that this experience helps our students feel God’s presence in their hearts and that they continue to grow in faith, love, and kindness.

May God bless each of them and their families on this joyful occasion.

Upcoming events:

  • Friday 13 June: Year 2 Excursion to the WA Shipwreck Museum
  • Friday 13 June: First Eucharist Ceremony 4W @6.30 pm
  • Saturday 14 June: First Eucharist Ceremony 4G @ 3.30 pm
  • Tuesday 17 June: Pre Primary to Year 2 Liturgy @ 10.45 am
  • Tuesday 17 June: Catholic School Advisory Council Meeting

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school a safe and healthy place to learn and grow.

In Gratitude,

Gina Burns

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION AT ST COLUMBA’S SCHOOL – UPDATE

At the end of last year, Mrs Olivia Ioppolo, our Students With Disabilities (SWD) Coordinator, retired after working extensively with students with additional needs for a number of years. Having worked closely with Mrs Ioppolo for the past couple of years, and with a passion for those students who have additional needs, I have added the SWD role into my areas of responsibility as Assistant Principal. Inclusive Education will now incorporate all of our SWD students, as well as all students with additional needs.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me at any stage if you have any questions or concerns around Inclusive Education – or you just want to touch base! I would like to take this opportunity to request any documentation that has not previously been provided to the school, regarding any testing, assessment or diagnosis, be sent through to me for our records. It is always important for the school to have all of this documentation, to ensure we are providing the best possible support for our students, as well as complying with all legal requirements. Your assistance with this is truly appreciated.

Religious Education and Curriculum News

Year 1 classes

In Religion, we’ve been learning about how we grow and change – physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. We had so much fun playing a “Guess Who?” game to see if we could recognise each other and reflect on how much we’ve grown!

Technologies classes

In Technologies, we are learning how computers communicate! The amazing Year 2 students have been learning how to use coding to make sprites move around and interact. They have mastered Action and Loop blocks, debugging mistakes in their code and are now working on learning how to use Event blocks. Every day is a good day in Digital Technologies!

HEALTH NURSE  TIPS AND INFORMATION

Chickenpox

Chickenpox is caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus. In some children the illness will start with a fever or feeling unwell, but in others the rash will appear first.

The spots usually start on the chest as red, itchy lumps. These will become fluid-filled blisters, which will burst and form a crust.

Chickenpox is very contagious and is spread when the person sneezes or coughs or when someone comes in contact with the fluid from one the blisters. Your child should have had the chickenpox vaccination at 18 months of age. Vaccination is the best way to avoid chickenpox, so make sure that your child is up-to-date with his or her vaccinations.

If your child does contract chickenpox, keep him or her home from school for at least five days after the first spots appear, and until after all blisters are dry. Give your child plenty of fluids and paracetamol, if needed (Do not give Ibuprofen or Aspirin). If blisters are in the mouth, try a soothing mouth wash and don’t give foods high in acid or salt. Soothing lotions or oils for the bath can help the itch.

Diagnosis should be confirmed by a doctor as chickenpox is a notifiable disease (it must be reported). Please make sure the school is informed if the doctor diagnosis chickenpox.

Contact your local Community Health Nurse, (insert name here) on (insert number here) for more information or see the fact sheet at Chickenpox (Varicella) (health.wa.gov.au)
