Principal's Post

Dear Community of St Columba’s,

Winter is now truly upon us, arriving with a dramatic deluge of rain this week. As always, we are keeping a close eye on the weather, monitoring conditions regularly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students.

We use the best information available to us at the time to guide decisions around any necessary changes to our schedule or activities and we appreciate your ongoing patience and understanding as we navigate any interruptions that may arise due to inclement weather.

Despite the chill and the rain, the warmth of our school community continues to shine through.

A Seasonal Reminder

This time of year also brings an increase in coughs, colds, and other bugs. We are encouraging all students to help keep germs at bay by:

  • Practising excellent hand hygiene, especially before entering school, before and after eating, blowing their nose, and whenever hands are dirty;
  • Coughing or sneezing into their elbows rather than hands;
  • Using tissues once and throwing them in the bin;
  • Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water or using hand sanitiser when needed.

Importantly, the best place for unwell students is at home, where they can rest, recover, and be monitored closely. This helps protect the health of everyone in our school community.

If we believe your child is too unwell to be at school, we will contact you to request they be collected. If we are unable to get in touch with a parent, we will contact who you have listed as an emergency contact. Please ensure these contacts are up to date.

Oval Use Reminder – After School Hours Care

A friendly reminder that the school oval is a licensed space for OSHC students who are enrolled in After School Hours Care. For safety and compliance reasons, we kindly ask that all families ensure students refrain from playing on the oval after the school day ends.

Premier’s Reading Challenge – Congratulations Finn!

Congratulations to all students who are participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Your enthusiasm for reading is inspiring, and we encourage you to keep up the fantastic work. It is not too late to join in. Let’s make reading a fun and shared adventure.

MID-YEAR IEP REVIEWS

Teachers are currently conducting Mid-Year IEP Reviews. This involves updating information contained in the IEP as well as making any changes / adjustments deemed necessary. As part of this review process, teachers will either request a meeting with parents/caregivers, or send (via email) a copy of the reviewed document home for parents/caregivers to read. Parents/caregivers then have the opportunity (either in person or via email) to feedback on the reviewed document before it is finalised. Please take this opportunity to ensure all information regarding diagnoses and service providers is current.

Please note: Blue font is used to indicate all updated information – so that it can be easily compared to the original information provided at the beginning of the year.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher, or feel free to contact me.

Religious Education and Curriculum News

Year 3 classes Religious Education

On Tuesday, we visited the Schoenstatt Shrine for a day of prayer and reflection. Together, we created prayer intentions for people in our lives—such as family, friends, teachers, and those in need. These were shared with the group before placing a small lamb at the shrine and lighting a candle.

We also made “Forgive Me” lambs, reminding us that when we make mistakes, we can seek forgiveness and make things right. A highlight of the day was discovering that God’s greatest treasure is… us!

On Thursday evening, we celebrated the Sacrament of Penance with our families—a joyful reminder of God’s love and forgiveness.

Music classes

This semester, our junior music classes have been full of energy and creativity as students have sung, danced, and played a range of instruments, all while exploring key musical elements such as rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and tempo.

Our Pre-Primary students explored body percussion by composing their own rhythmic patterns and also learned to play a familiar song using the boom whackers.

The Year One students were excited to use their own brand new glockenspiels this term (a big thank you to our P&F), while our Year Two students composed and performed their own rhythms to perform on the keyboards.

HEALTH NURSE  TIPS AND INFORMATION

Influenza

Influenza, or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes, or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness and muscle aches.

People with the flu should rest and drink plenty of fluid. Use paracetamol in recommended doses if necessary – but do not give children any medication containing aspirin.

Be sure to keep your child home from school while he or she is sick. If you require schoolwork for your child, contact the school to prepare some for you to collect.

The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by washing your hands regularly and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.

Free flu vaccines are available from 1 May – 30 June 2025 to protect Western Australians during the peak flu period. If you haven’t booked your flu vaccine yet, you still have time!

For more information, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic.
