Principal's Post

Dear Community of St Columba’s,

Last week was a busy and exciting time for our school, filled with memorable events that brought joy and learning to students and families. One of the highlights was the Year 5 Assembly, where students put on a fantastic performance dedicated to their mums. Their creativity, confidence, and enthusiasm made for a heartwarming celebration that was enjoyed by all who attended. We also hosted a highly successful Neurodivergence Conference at the Bayswater Tennis Club, which welcomed 55 parents for an engaging and informative session. I would like to thank our Social Worker Nicole Leach for her organisation. The event fostered meaningful conversations and strengthened our community’s understanding and support for neurodivergent learners. To top off the week, Italian Day brought a burst of culture and fun to the school. Thanks to Simona Castro for her organisation and love for Italian Day. Students had the chance to experience the pizza-making process, colouring in competitions and several games at lunch time.

Year 6 Winter Carnival

Congratulations to our Year 6 students for their fantastic participation in the Winter Carnival on Monday at the Kingsway Sporting Complex. It was great to see everyone getting involved and enjoying the chance to choose between soccer, football, or netball. Your enthusiasm, teamwork, and sportsmanship made the day a huge success—well done!

Reconciliation Workshop

We were delighted to see so many parents and their children attending the Reconciliation workshops held at the parish on Tuesday evening. These sessions provided a meaningful opportunity for families to reflect, learn, and grow together in faith, and it was heartwarming to witness such strong community involvement and support.

National Simultaneously Storytime

Today we celebrated National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) with all classes viewing the chosen story for this year ‘The Truck Cat’ by Debroah Frenkel and Danny Snell. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual event in Australia that celebrates the joy of reading and storytelling. Organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), it involves schools, libraries, childcare centres, and families across the country all reading the same book at the same time on the same day. The event aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, especially among young children, and to highlight the role of libraries and educators in fostering a love of books. Each year, a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author is selected for the event, and it’s read aloud simultaneously by thousands of participants nationwide. It’s a fun, unifying experience that brings communities together through the power of storytelling.

Religious Education and Curriculum News

Year 2 classes

In Year 2, we have been learning about the rules that God gave us to protect us and to show His love for us. These rules are called the Commandments. We understand that Jesus was called a teacher by His followers, who came to learn from Him. Jesus summarised the Commandments into two key teachings. We have explored the second Commandment of Jesus which teaches us that people must love others and themselves. We have discussed and reflected on various ways we can show love for others and for ourselves, while acting with respect and integrity in our words and actions.

Recently, Year 2 led the school in a special Mass celebrating our wonderful mothers for Mother’s Day. Students created their own special message of love for their mum.

Italian Day:

Our Italian Day last Friday was a great success! It was wonderful to see the students so excited. Students were immersed in an authentic cultural experience of seeing a wood fire oven pizza truck and tasting the pizza from Mio Sapore. Juliano did an awesome job of getting so many pizzas out in the short time we had. Our library was transformed with a beautiful Venice backdrop for students to participate in an Italian photo booth. The masks and soccer balls were a hit!! Thank you also to the enthusiastic Year 6’s who organised some lunch time activities for the day such as colouring in competitions. The winners received lovely prizes.

Grazie a tutti / Thank you everyone!
