Dear Community of St Columba’s,
National Sorry Day
National Sorry Day is an important time for our school community to pause, reflect, and learn together about Australia’s history, particularly the experiences of First Nations Peoples who were affected by past government policies. Through stories, discussions, and classroom activities, children are encouraged to think about the meaning of saying “sorry” and how we can all contribute to a more inclusive and caring community. As parents, your support in continuing these conversations at home can help children develop a deeper sense of compassion, empathy, and respect in learning about the diverse histories that shape our nation.
National Sorry Day marks the beginning of Reconciliation Week. This is a time for all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
Coincidentally many of our Year 3 students will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation this week. As children prepare to receive God’s forgiveness, they are invited to reflect on their own actions, say sorry with sincerity, and seek to make things right.
This mirrors the spirit of National Sorry Day, reminding us that saying “sorry” is more than words. It is about understanding, healing, and moving forward with kindness and compassion. Together, these experiences provide a powerful opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of forgiveness, both in their relationships with others and in their relationship with God.
School Cross Country
Our much-loved sports teacher, Mr Banks, is currently on leave after sustaining a sporting injury. He is being well cared for as he recovers, and we are pleased to share that plans are in place to ensure our School Cross Country Carnival will still go ahead as scheduled. We wish Mr Banks a smooth and speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him back soon.
Kiss and Drive
We have noticed that more families are arriving slightly after 3:05 pm, which is helping to ease the congestion that typically builds up at the Almondbury Way and Roberts Street roundabout. Thank you! We kindly ask all parents to continue keeping the roundabout clear. If the Kiss and Drive area is full, please consider driving through and parking in one of the available bays. Our duty teachers are often able to spot your car and will alert your child that you are parked. Alternatively, you may wish to park and walk a short distance to collect your child.
Late Arrivals and Early Departures
We have had a slight improvement to our reminders in last week’s newsletter about late arrivals and early departures. If you missed the information, please refer to last week’s Donegal (newsletter.)
