Dear Community of St Columba’s,
As we approach the end of this school term, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for your support throughout these months. Your involvement and encouragement have truly made a positive difference in your child’s educational journey.
As an update to last week’s post, I would like to revise the figure that was raised on St Columba’s Day/Mercy Missions Day. We raised $3 660.65 towards Mercy Missions Australia. Well done and congratulations to all involved.
Next week, you will receive a Semester Report detailing the progress and achievements your child has made up to this point. It has been a joy for us to review each student’s accomplishments and growth. I am delighted to see the strides students have taken in their learning in all areas.
I also want to extend my thanks to each class teacher for their efforts in providing thoughtful comments that provide a comprehensive summary of your child’s achievements and set clear goals for the upcoming semester. Their insights and guidance are invaluable in shaping your child’s educational path.
Your partnership with us is vital, and we appreciate your trust and collaboration. Together, we can continue to nurture and support your child’s development in the best possible way. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions or need further information regarding your child’s progress.

eSafety – Issues and Advice
Over the past few weeks, we have been sharing various sections of the eSafety website, which was created by the Australian Government. One section is the ‘Issues and advice’ page for adults. This contains advice for many issues parents may come across, whatever age their child may be. It includes advice on things such as helping with screen time, cyberbullying, ‘are they old enough’ and other sensitive matters. These sections also have downloadable resources to use.

Religious Education and Curriculum News
From our Year 6 classes :
The Year 6’s have been learning about the four ways that Jesus is present in the Eucharist – the Bread & Wine, the Priest, the Word & the Assembled People.
From our Year 5 & 6 Science classes :
CHEMICAL SCIENCES! This term, students in Year 6 have been exploring reversible and irreversible changes to matter by using common, everyday substances and considering everyday observations. They have been examining reversible changes of state and irreversible chemical changes with practical investigations and experiments.
Meanwhile the Year 5’s are focusing on the three states of matter – solids, liquids, and gases, and how they are used to classify matter. Students have also been planning and performing an experiment to compare the viscosity of liquids, considering and controlling variables to ensure the experiment is a fair test.
From our Junior Science Classes :
This term in science lessons, students have been learning about chemistry!
The Pre-Primary’s have been going on ‘material hunts’ in our playground, they found metal, wood, plastic, rubber and rope. They have had lots of fun testing classroom materials to see if they are magnetic.
Year One students are observing how heating foods can change its properties. We made towers out of hard, straight, uncooked spaghetti and then the following week, we used flexible and sticky cooked spaghetti to create a funny picture.
The Year Twos have been learning about mixtures. Last week we made ‘ooblek’ slime and observed how changing the quantities of the ingredients changed its properties.
Students in Year Three are learning about solids and liquids. They are currently working on an investigation on whether an ice cube will melt faster in water or air.
The Year Fours have recently completed an investigation into which type of ball bounces highest. They are now learning about how for thousands of years our nation’s first scientists, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, have used their knowledge to utilise natural materials available to them.
From our Year 3 White Class :
This term, students in 3 White have had a wonderful opportunity to be part of ‘St Columba’s Veggie Patch’.
Under the guidance, wisdom and ‘green fingers’ of Mr Sorgiovanni, students have planted an assortment of veggies. Each week, they measure and record the growth of their veggies. This data will be used in a Mathematics activity, and will be added to the photos and writing that students have created and collected as part of this program.
This week, students enjoyed harvesting some of the lettuce with a little help from their Principal, Mrs Gina Burns.
